THE THREE DARK STAGES OF A BABY IN MOTHER'S WOMB - SCIENTIFIC MIRACLES OF HOLY QURAN

General

1. There is an elegant description of origin, development and step by step developmental stages of intrauterine life in Holy Quran. Modern embryology is a fairly recent development which has its beginning with the invention of microscope in the 17th century. However the concept of the human being developing in stages was not recognised until much later. But the scientists then and most Muslim and non Muslim scholars do not even know that the holy Quran had provided a detailed description of the significant events in human development from the stages of gametes and conception until the full term pregnancy and delivery or even postpartum. Actually information in the Quran corrected many superstitious and vague ideas about human development that were prevalent before.

2. The fetus in the mother’s womb is a fragile thing. If it were not protected well and from heat, cold, temperature variations, impacts or even the mother’s sudden movement might kill it or cause it irreparable damage. The three stages in the mother’s womb protect the fetus against all sorts of dangers. These are as fols:

a. The abdominal wall,

b- The uterine wall and

c- The amniotic sac.

3. With the level of knowledge at the time, this information could not have been available. The fetus continues to develop in the dark of these three regions. The amniotic sac contains a fluid that fills the amnion to protect the embryo from desiccation and shock. This substance is a kind of cushion that absorbs shocks, balances exerted pressures, prevents the amniotic membrane from adhering to the embryo and enables the fetus to change position in the womb. If the fetus could not easily move in the said fluid, it would remain idle as a mass of flesh and would likely suffer injuries leading to various complications. Equal distribution of heat enables the fetus to be at a constant temperature: 31°C. So our Creator has designed everything perfectly in its minutest detail, satisfying all the requirements of our body and protecting it against the dangers lurking in the outside world.

Meaning of Quranic Verse

4. 'He makes you, in the wombs of your mothers, in stages, one after another in three veils of darkness. Such is Allah your Lord and Cherisher: to Him belongs (all) dominion. There is no god but He: then how are ye turned away (from your true Center)?' - Surah-Az-Zumar, 6

5. The Quran points out to the three dark stages of the baby in the womb with this verse and states that man is created in the womb with a three phased creation. The Arabic expression, فِيظُلُمَاتٍثَلَاثٍ, means 'In Three Veils of Darkness' indicates the three dark phases of the embryo during its development.

6. The order of these stages is appended below:

a. The darkness of the anterior abdominal wall.

b. The darkness of the uterine wall.

c. The darkness of amniochorionic membrane.

Modern Biology 

7. The modern biology of today has shown that the embryologic development of baby takes place in three different dark phases as it is informed in the verse of Quran. The developments in the area of embryology have proved that these parts are made up of three segments. This subject, which exists in all course books of embryology of the faculty of medicine, is among the rudiments. For instance, this fact is explained as follows in the source called Basic Human Embryology, which is one of the basic reference books on embryology:

8. Life in the uterus has three stages as follows:

a. Pre Embryonic Stage. (first two and a half weeks).

b- Embryonic Stage. (up to the end of the eighth week).

c. And the Fetal Stage. (from the eighth week to the birth).

9. These stages incl different development stages of the baby. The information which is about the development of the baby in the womb can only be acquired by observations made with modern technologic equipment. However, as it is seen, attention has been drawn to this information miraculously in the verses of the Quran just like many other scientific facts.
