The Parent’s Guide to Educational Technology

The Parent’s Guide to Educational Technology

Parent Guide

General

1. Children use devices like smartphones, tablets, Chromebooks, and laptops at school and they also often use a vocabulary full of technology jargon that may seem completely foreign. One reason is that both tech-savvy and tech-hesitant parents are not always familiar with the world of education technology, or “edtech.” The truth is that education technology is an important part of education today and parents should feel excited – not intimidated – by what their children are able to learn and do.

Definition of EDITECH

2. Education technology, or “edtech,” is the study and practice of teaching and learning processes and strategies that incorporate devices, apps, programs, and media. Edtech can be used in traditional classrooms, at home, and as part of learning in almost any setting.

Overview of Editech

3. This guide provides an overview of edtech for parents. Our goal isn’t to make you a tech expert – that’s not necessary – but to help you understand how your children and their teachers are likely using technology and how you can support that use both at school and at home.

Edtech With Students
Students Learn

4. Many adults use technology tools and programs as an integral part of both their personal and professional lives. They get their news, share ideas, and connect and collaborate with friends and co-workers using devices and apps every day. Our children are also using technology in both their personal and educational lives. They need to learn how to properly and responsibly communicate via text, audio, video, and digital image creation because the careers of today and of the future demand it.

Technology Use

5. Children are also using technology for fun and to socialize with their friends and they need to learn how those same tools are just as useful in academics. They may be experts at using apps, accessing websites, and navigating streaming services in their personal lives. They should be just as skilled at navigating those platforms and the broader internet for the information they need to be successful students and become well-informed and productive adults.

Using Editech

6. The influx of education technology in schools is not just about replacing printed textbooks with ebooks. While ebooks can be more interactive for students and help lighten their backpacks, they are just the tip of the proverbial edtech iceberg. Here are a few examples of how edtech is changing the way students learn:

Communicate the World Classroom

7. Human beings are learning all the time and learning is not limited to the classroom. While nothing can replace a high quality teacher, students are now able to use email, social media and video chat platforms to communicate with experts and peers beyond their school walls.

Collaboration
Parent Guide

8. One of the most imp workplace skills is collaboration, and it is true at school as well. Often students want to or are assigned to work together as they learn. Collaborative digital tools allow them to keep shared notes, edit digital creations at the same time, and work with their classmates from the comfort of home if they run out of class time. It is even poss for students from schools that are miles away to wk together thanks to digital collaboration tools.

Advantages and Drawbacks

9. The no of ways in which the smartphone has made our lives easier is vast. While there is no shortage of ex that illustrate how the smartphone has improved our lives, a more interesting and novel thought experiment would have us explore some of the more detrimental side effects associated with our collective addiction to smartphones and society’s unending need to constantly stay connected.

Mental Health Crisis

10. One of the more intriguing data points is that kids from the iGen generation are more likely to commit suicide or experience depression than millennials. 'It’s not an exaggeration to describe iGen as being on the brink of the worst mental health crisis in decades'. The connections smartphones provide are truly only surface-level and that as kids spend more and more time connecting with friends digitally, actual human interaction becomes markedly rarer.

Unhappy Kids

11. Various studies showed that kids and teens who spend more time on their smartphones tend to be, on average, more unhappy than their counterparts who aren’t as tied to their smartphones. Report underscores the fact that too much of a good thing can often result in unforeseen consequences.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs)

12. ICT, especially, internet and mobile tech are increasingly becoming an integral part of children’s lives. More and more children rely on them to learn, engage, participate, play, wk and socialise. ICTs are also proving to be useful in children’s protection. They can be used to seek info on svcs, collect, document and share data, and report abuse. Furthermore, ICTs can have an enormous potential to overcome many of the challenges vulnerable children face in the offline world. For instance, for children with disabilities ICTs can serve as valuable tools for accessing services and offer opportunities for social inclusion, networking and participation.

Precaution Against Potential Risks

13. The openness of the internet coupled with the digital divide between children, parents, caregivers and teachers can, however, leave children exposed to online harm, which can negatively impact their personal development and well-being. This is especially the case in low and middle-income countries where gaps in overall child protection tend to be greater, and digital literacy levels among parents and caregivers lower. Examples of potential risks include exposure to disturbing or potentially harmful content such as violent images, cyberbullying, sexual solicitation (online grooming), circulation of child sexual abuse materials and live stream abuse. It is therefore important to strike a balance between opportunities and risks that the ICTs bring and to better understand what makes some children particularly vulnerable to risk of harm, so that protective strategies can be effectively targeted.

Child Protection Program

14. United Nations is increasingly exploring how ICTs can be used in child protection programming. UN is also engaged in advocacy for the criminalization of child sexual abuse materials and online grooming of children; the strengthening of institutional capacities to implement legislation and policies related to investigation and prosecution of cases involving online sexual abuse/ exploitation; supporting the establishment of comprehensive services for children abused/ exploited through the internet and mobile phones; raising awareness and building capacities of children, teachers and caregivers on the risks of ICTs and protective measures and supporting research projects to enhance the understanding of children’s use of ICTs and appr responses to violence, exploitation and abuse facilitated through ICTs.
