Independent journalism is under attack globally. More journalists are behind bars for their work than ever. The world often portrays reporters dodging bullets to bring news from the front lines of conflict. Many do cover war, and some pay with their lives. And to mention - a notable number of journalists were killed, wounded and murdered. They were deliberately sought out and killed because of their reporting, writing and providing information. We have seen the security footage of an unfortunate journalist Jamal Khashoggi walking into a nondescript building in Turkey and we shrugged. He got inside his mother country consulate office with a big hope and full trust that he will get his due honor as a Saudi Citizen and could never think of giving his valuable life and that to in such a merciless way which was out of his imagination. Even the whole Saudi population will definitely and undoubtedly stand against this so painful a killing. He went inside the consulate office just to get some of his required papers to fulfil his ever cherished dream to change his marital status to get his lovely wife to leave a peaceful and enjoyable life. But his ever misfortune - he was missing and disappeared for ever. I am certain tears are rolling down throughout the humanity around the planet. Question arises as to how people can be so cruel, such inhuman, doing act worse than beast. Unthinkable, unbelievable and no way can be thought of such an act. 

People who has committed such beast like heinous act can no way escape from the intellectual judgement from the people who are capable of and vested the sacred responsibility from God to take care of such merciless incidents. Whole world is keeping a desirous and keenful eye to watch the justice from those 'Wonderful Judges' here in this world. Whole world community is eagerly waiting for that. Or else, it is most likely the whole world community will take care of this heinous acts which is likely to be much and much worse. Now maybe we were intrigued and watched or read a little more. Whatever our reaction, there's a reason the story of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi leaving his fiancée in an Istanbul street and disappearing into his country's consulate has been all over the news. And there's a reason we should all care about it.

Terrible and Horrifying Incident

Saudi Arabia has admitted to the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside its consulate in the Turkish city of Istanbul. Khashoggi, a Saudi writer and dissident, entered the building on October 2 to obtain documentation certifying he had divorced his ex-wife. He never came out. After two weeks of repeated denials that it had anything to do with his disappearance, the kingdom admitted on Saturday that the dissident journalist died in a "fist-fight" inside the consulate.

Threat to Journalist's Lives

The case of missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi has shocked and captivated the world, as information trickles out about his disappearance and possible murder inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Beyond the gruesome details, at the core of this story is a journalist, who had been threatened for his reporting and opinions. Khashoggi wrote critically about the Saudi government, warning the world, that Saudi Arabia could never be a democracy under the current Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He highlighted the plight and struggles of journalists in his country, saying there was no space for free speech since journalists and intellectuals are often jailed for expressing their views. So, how much of a threat are journalists to Arab governments?

Journalists Are Not Safe

Many were digging into political and financial corruption, fraud, smuggling, money laundering or organized crime. They probed too deep, touched a nerve and paid with their lives. Even in Europe, reporters are no longer safe. Daphne Caruana Galizia, who worked on the Panama Papers with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, was probing the links between politicians and criminals in her native Malta. She angered powerful people. Someone ordered a bomb placed in her car a year ago this month, hoping her reporting would die along with her. A few months later in Slovakia, a gunman broke into the apartment of investigative reporter Ján Kuciak and shot him to death along with his fiancée. Journalists are also killed, rogered, raptured around the globe including Bangladesh, Myanmar, India and almost all countries.

Fact Findings

These high-profile murders caused outrage and a backlash. But despite all that, the people who ordered and paid for the assassinations have still not been brought to justice. That is the sad pattern when it comes to journalist killings. In nearly nine out of 10 journalist murders the masterminds are never punished. Journalists around the world including Robert Mahoney, who is a journalist and advocate for press freedom and the deputy executive director of the Committee to Protect Journalists. He wrote this column for The Dallas Morning News. There is most likely to spread propaganda campaign against Jamal Khashoggi that is likely to be designed to protect the dissident journalist’s alleged murder by operatives of Saudi Arabia.Few people outlets that fuel suspicion of Khashoggi, highlighting his association with the Muslim Brotherhood in his youth and raising conspiratorial questions about his work decades ago as an embedded reporter covering Osama bin Laden, the fact needs to be considered in a positive and intelligent way. Khashoggi, a Saudi citizen, left his home country last year and was granted residency in the United States by federal authorities. He lived in Virginia and wrote for The Washington Post.

Fred Hiatt, The Post’s editorial page editor who published Khashoggi’s work, sharply criticized the false and distorted claims about Khashoggi, who is feared to have been killed and dismembered by Saudi operatives. As anyone knows who knew Jamal — or read his columns — he was dedicated to the values of free speech and open debate. He went into exile to promote those values, and now he may even have lost his life for his dogged determination in their defense.

The GOP officials declined to share the names of the lawmakers and others who are circulating information critical of Khashoggi because they said doing so would risk exposing them as sources.

Hiatt said in a statement. “It may not be surprising that some Saudi-inspired trolls are now trying to distract us from the crime by smearing Jamal. It may not even be surprising to see a few Americans joining in. But in both cases it is reprehensible.”

Whole world community wants "true justice" for Khashoggi and the "authority that gave the orders" to kill the Saudi dissident punished. They need to know where Jamal's body is and want the rest of the world to know how it happened and what happened exactly,".

Amnesty Demands Saudi Arabia Hand Over Khashoggi's Body for Independent Autopsy

Amnesty International has called for an independent probe into Khashoggi's killing and demanded Saudi Arabia "immediately produce" his body so an autopsy can be performed by forensic experts "in accordance with international standards". "The investigation findings by the Saudi authorities claiming that Khashoggi died as a result of a "fist-fight" inside the consulate are not trustworthy and marks an abysmal new low to Saudi Arabia's human rights record," Samah Hadid, Amnesty's director of campaigns for the Middle East, said in a statement.

"His family and the world deserve the full truth about what happened to him, and those responsible, however high their rank or status, must face justice," Hadid added. "An independent investigation will be the only guarantee against what increasingly appears as a Saudi whitewash surrounding the circumstances of Khashoggi's murder or any attempts by other governments to sweep the issue under the carpet to preserve lucrative arms deals and other business ties with Riyadh."

European Leaders Heap Skepticism on Saudi Account of Khashoggi Killing

European leaders have demanded further examination of Khashoggi's killing after Saudi Arabia's confession on Saturday that the 59-year-old writer and critic died during a "fist-fight" in the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul. German Chancellor Angela Merkel rejected Saudi’s explanation of Khashoggi's death. Merkel said the “horrific events” had not been “cleared up”, Bloomberg reported. “Of course we demand that they be cleared up,” Merkel added. Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen also expressed scepticism over the Saudi’s account of Khashoggi’s death. “The fact that the Saudis last night confirmed that he died, after previously insisting he left the consulate alive, shows that we haven’t been told the full truth, and we must insist on getting that,” Bloomberg quoted Rasmussen as saying.

"A lot still remains uncertain. What happened? How did he die? Who is responsible? I expect and I hope that all relevant facts will be clear as soon as possible … Thorough investigation is necessary," Rutte told reporters in Denmark's capital, Copenhagen.

European Parliament President Antonio Tajani, meanwhile, called for an international investigation to examine the evidence linked to Khashoggi's death.

"A rigorous, international investigation is urgently needed to examine evidence, clarify circumstances surrounding death of Jamal Khashoggi," Tajani said in a post on Twitter.

Britain Considering 'Next Steps' Following Saudi Arabia Confession Over Khashoggi Killing

Britain is considering its "next steps" following Saudi Arabia's admission over the killing of Khashoggi within the Kingdom's consulate in Istanbul, the UK's foreign ministry said in a statement. "We send our condolences to Jamal Khashoggi's family after this confirmation of his death. We are considering the Saudi report and our next steps," the statement said. "As the Foreign Secretary has said, this was a terrible act and those responsible must be held to account," the statement added. The UK's main opposition Labour party has called on the governing Conservative Party to suspend arms sales to the kingdom. Khashoggi case 'most serious' diplomatic crisis faced by Saudi since 9/11. Marwan Kabalan, director of policy and analysis at the Doha-based Arab Center for Research & Policy Studies, said the uproar sparked by the killing of Khashoggi has posed the "most serious diplomatic crisis for Saudi Arabia since September 11 [2001]".

Saudi Arabia Admits Khashoggi Killed in Istanbul Consulate

"The Saudi's story will not be convincing to many people; it's very difficult to believe the hit squad that arrived in Istanbul came to have a discussion with Khashoggi," Kabalan told Al Jazeera. "I think with the help of their friends in Washington - I'm talking about President Donald Trump, who is trying to provide them with an exit and way out - they may think that they are close to closing this case," he added. "But I don't think so because it very much depends on whether the Turks are going to accept this Saudi story. The Turks may have their own version of what happened in the consulate."

Former CIA Intelligence Officer: Saudi Account is 'Foolish'

Former CIA intelligence officer Glenn Carle told Al Jazeera the "absurdity of the crumbling cover stories" would bring a smile to the face of anyone paying attention. The newest account, in which Khashoggi died during a fight with consulate officials, was right to draw ire, Carle said. "As though a 59 or 60-year-old man would walk into a consulate … and pick a fight with 15 thugs. I don't think so. So the story is foolish." Carle said Trump's statements affirming that he believes the Saudi account of what happened were "stupid and offensive" but "characteristic".

White House 'Saddened' to Hear Confirmation of Khashoggi's Death

The White House acknowledged in a statement the Saudi announcement on the investigation of Khashoggi's death. "We are saddened to hear confirmation of Mr. Khashoggi's death, and we offer our deepest condolences to his family, fiance and friends," White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement. She added that the US will continue to closely follow the international investigations into the incident and "advocate for justice that is timely, transparent and in accordance with all due process". 

UN Chief 'Deeply Troubled' by Confirmation of Journalist's Death

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is "deeply troubled" by the confirmation of Jamal Khashoggi, a UN spokesman said. The spokesman added that Guterres "stresses the need for a prompt, thorough and transparent investigation" into the circumstances surrounding Khashoggi's death. 

Obstacles to Journalism

A democracy cannot function without transparency and accountability. Citizens need independent journalists to inform them of what the government is doing in their name and how it is spending their tax money.

Control of information is power and there are many ways to choke the flow of news. In countries like Hungary, politicians and their business allies buy up major media companies and shrink the space for critical journalism. 

Others like Turkey and China throw troublesome reporters in prison, usually on sham charges and with no due process, as a warning to others. 

All are aware about the miserable states of journalists around the globe which is an Obstacles to Journalism. This impunity eats away at the foundations of democracy. It breeds fear and self censorship. If police and judges are in the pockets of criminals, what reporters from a poorly resourced news outlet are going to stick their necks out when they see what has happened to colleagues?

But that should not be a cause for complacency. 

According to DALLAS NEWS - President Donald Trump has consistently belittled individual journalists, undermined the legitimacy of the press' role in a democracy, branded journalists the enemy of the people, and waved away awkward truths as fake news. The hatred toward journalists in some quarters is palpable and the atmosphere for the press generally is toxic. Now Trump, being a world most powerful leader and an highly intellectual President, stands accused of failing to insist that his Saudi allies and erstwhile business partners explain what exactly has happened to Khashoggi.

Why Blaming Khashoggi?

Khashoggi angered Saudi royals with his critical insights into power and corruption in the kingdom in his columns for The Washington Post. 

Few prominent conservative television personalities were making insinuations about Khashoggi’s background saying Khashoggi was tied to the Muslim Brotherhood.

While Khashoggi was once sympathetic to Islamist movements, he moved toward a more liberal, secular point of view, according to experts on the Middle East who have tracked his career. Khashoggi knew bin Laden in the 1980s and 1990s during the civil war in Afghanistan, but his interactions with bin Laden were as a journalist with a point of view who was working with a prized source. Nevertheless, the smears have escalated. Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son and key political booster, shared another person’s tweet last week with his millions of followers that included a line that Khashoggi was “tooling around Afghanistan with Osama bin Laden” in the 1980s, even though the context was a feature story on bin Laden’s activities. Few people labeled Khashoggi a 'longtime friend' of terrorists and claimed without evidence. 

A story in far-right FrontPage magazine casts Khashoggi as a “cynical and manipulative apologist for Islamic terrorism, not the mythical martyred dissident whose disappearance the media has spent the worst part of a week raving about,” and features a garish cartoon of bin Laden and Khashoggi with their arms around each other.

The conservative push comes as Saudi government supporters on Twitter have sought in a propaganda campaign to denigrate Khashoggi as a supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist movement once tolerated but now outlawed in Saudi Arabia as a terrorist organization.

Those aspersions — which many lawmakers have been wary of stating publicly because of the political risks of doing so — have begun to flare into public view as media outlets have amplified the claims, which are aimed in part at protecting to preserve the US - Saudi relationship and avoid confronting the Saudis on human rights.

That Saudi Arabia, a key US ally, could lure him to its diplomatic mission and butcher him with impunity, as Turkish officials report, sends a chilling message not only to would-be critical Saudi journalists but to journalists everywhere. It emboldens autocrats and says that journalists' lives are cheap.
