Be Aware of Facebook (FB) Crimes
General
1. Social media is the new way of bragging for those who commit crimes to gain a sense of self-power or self-importance. The audience is larger now and, perhaps, more seductive to those who are committing antisocial acts to fill personal needs of self-aggrandizement.
2. Crimes with a specific motive that involves FB as an accessory. And it’s not limited to cyberstalking, identity theft, distribution of child pornography materials etc. These crimes are pervasive on the internet.
Importance of Social Networking
3. I like to info and help all highlighting the imp of social networking and of all related form of communication. With the rapid diffusion of tech, the no of crimes is increased dramatically. It is needless to mention that Facebook (FB) has completely revolutionized the way people interact. But there’s a dark side to the world’s love affair with social media. Criminals are finding new ways to utilize FB to commit new and disturbing crimes that authorities don’t necessarily know may be. That’s why if you want to continue to enjoy social media, you should be aware of the common crimes committed on FB and other social media so that you can avoid becoming a victim. Here are the few most common Social Media crimes that you must know to save yourself drom danger:
4. Criminals have been utilizing the scam for centuries. In the Facebook world, scams are particularly effective at drawing people in by simply enticing an individual to click on a link that would interest almost anyone, such as an innocent-looking notification that you’ve won a free prize like a gift card. Then, in order to claim the prize, scammers require you to submit some information, such as a credit card number or Social Security number. This description may make it seem like scams are easy to spot, but even the most savvy social media user has to be on the lookout for illegitimate requests for information.
Common Scams and Fraud
5. There are lots of ways people try to scam you out of your money. The scams might be online — through email, the internet and social media — or the scammers might come to your door or contact you by mail, phone or text.
Money Laundering
6. Money laundering is when people make money through crimes such as fraud and drug dealing. They make it appear like they made the money legally so they can stop police finding out about their crimes.
Protect Yourself From Scams
a. Putting a few security measures in place can help to protect you from scammers.
b. On Your Phone and Computer:
(1) Use different, hard to guess passwords, such as a mix of numbers, letters, upper and lower case.
(2) Don't reply to unsolicited emails or texts, or click on links in them.
(3) Use security software on your computer and keep it up to date.
(4) Don't open spam emails — report them to concern authority and then delete them.
Social Bullying
7. Social Bullying is a common occurrence among teenagers on FB and one that can result in serious criminal charges if it goes far enough. Cyberbullying on FB has contributed to the deaths of several teens who either committed suicide or were killed by a peer. Cyberbullying that involves hacking or password and identity theft may be punishable under state law.
Suicide By Social Bullying
8. The infamous suicide of many people is the examples of cyberbullying gone terribly wrong. People were subjected to taunts and bullying for months before taking his/ her own life.
Cyber Stalking
9. The term stalking is thrown around a lot on FB, and it is often meant as a joke for regularly looking at someone’s profile. However, the actual act of cyberstalking is a common crime on the social networking site and can result in a serious offense. Cyberstalking typically involves harassing a person with messages, written threats, and other persistent online behavior that endangers a person’s safety. Although cyberstalking may seem like nothing more than annoying behavior, it is a legitimate cause for concern in many cases and can even lead to in-person stalking or endangerment if not treated seriously.
Robbery
10. It doesn’t take much for a thief to find out where you live, go to school, work, or hang out if you make that information readily available on FB. If you use FB’s check-in or Google Maps feature, then you could be in a heap of trouble if a robber is paying attention. This person isn’t always a complete stranger either; they may be an old acquaintance or someone else you’d never expect to come rob you.
Public Embarrassment
11. Although murders that happened because of jealousy in a relationship are relatively common, using FB intensified the actions involved as it is a very public platform. When one posts evidence about a failing relationship, the other party may experience a punctured ego (especially men) particularly when he is implied to be the cause of the failure. Things will get ugly when you wash your dirty linen in public.
Identity Theft
12. Aith the large amount of personal info swarming around FB these days, it has become fairly easy for criminals to steal users’ identities. Hackers often break into users’ e-mails and make fake FB accounts. From there they can access personal and bank information and cause havoc to your sense of security. Protect yourself from identity theft on FB by keeping your profile very secure and free of pers info that a criminal would love to have.
Impersonation of FB
13. Online identity thefts are rampant across the world. We see it in the thousands of fake profiles of celebrities on FB and Twitter, with some successfully misleading others into thinking they’re genuine profiles. Nevertheless, identity theft can turn into a serious offence depending on what is done with the fake profile. Most people are not aware that there are laws out there to protect against online identity thefts.
Defamation
14. An individual commits the crime of defamation when they communicate a false statement to a third party that paints another individual or entity in a negative light. FB makes communicating defamatory statements frighteningly easy, and the exposure FB provides makes it more likely that businesses or individuals will be harmed by the defamatory statement, and thus more likely to pursue legal remedies. Be careful what you say on FB; you may be committing a crime without even knowing it.
Harassment/ Embarrassment
15. Harassment happens all the time on FB. From sexual harassment to assault threats, there has been a significant increase in the number of harassment cases happening on FB. It’s not uncommon for sex offenders and sexual predators to prey on unsuspecting victims on FB and even pose as a teen or college student. Harassing messages, inappropriate comments, and other persistent behaviors should be reported to FB and your local police station.
