Saudi Prosecutor Seeks Death Penalty in Khashoggi Killing

1. Saudi Kingdom is seeking death penalty for five people accused of carrying out journalist's Jamal Khashoggi killing, Shaalan al-Shaalan says. Saudi Arabia will pursue the death penalty for five suspects charged with ordering and carrying out the killing of the Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi, in the latest effort to distance the country’s de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, from the grisly murder.

Shaalan Al-Shaalan told a news conference in Riyadh that Ahmed Al Assiri, the kingdom's former deputy head of intelligence dispatched a team to Turkey to persuade Khashoggi to return to Saudi Arabia. He also said after the failure attempt to bring him back, the head of the Saudi team in Istanbul ordered that Khashoggi to be killed. The 60 yr old man then died from a lethal injection and his body was dismembered and taken out of the building, he said.

3. Al Shaalan said that 21 people were now in custody, with 11 indicted and referred to trial, adding that Saud Al Qahtani, a former adviser to the royal court had been banned from travelling and remained under investigation. He also said Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was not implicated in the gruesome murder that has triggered global outrage.

The Saudi public prosecutor claimed that Saudi agents including the head of forensics at the national intelligence service and members of Prince Mohammed’s security detail had orders to abduct Khashoggi but decided to kill him when he resisted. Saudi prosecutors say 21 of its officials have been indicted including the 15 man hit team as well as crews alleged to have carried out reconnaissance before the murder.

5. Ankara and Riyadh have been conducting a joint investigation into Khashoggi’s death. However, Turkish officials accuse their Saudi counterparts of stonewalling on the whereabouts of his body, and sending a forensic team disguised as investigators, who, rather than investigating the murder, attempted to scrub the consulate of Khashoggi’s DNA.

5. JAMAL KHASHOGGI walked in to the Saudi Consulate four weeks ago on Tuesday to obtain a simple document allowing him to marry. Instead, he was brutally murdered by a team of 15 agents sent from Riyadh. Saudi authorities now acknowledge the crime was premeditated. Yet much about it remains undisclosed, including what happened to Mr. Khashoggi’s body, which has not been returned to his family. Saudi agents were waiting when Jamal Khashoggi walked into their country’s consulate in Istanbul few weeks ago. Mr. Khashoggi was dead within minutes, beheaded, dismembered, his fingers severed, and within two hours the killers were gone, according to details from audio recordings described by a senior Turkish official.
