AN ANALYSIS ON 'FAMOUS SPEECH THAT MADE OBAMA PRESIDENT' OF UNITED STATES

AN ANALYSIS ON 'FAMOUS SPEECH THAT MADE OBAMA PRESIDENT AND HOW TO DERIVE BENEFIT

HUDA VIDEO

General

1. One speech could be all that is separating you from stardom in your career, business, field. anywhere for sure. It's not exaggeration! One speech could be all it takes! It's just like a movie - Just as a movie can take an actor from zero to hero so too can a speech. For Barack Obama it was a sparkling speech that he delivered in 2004 that propelled him into the limelight. Before this speech he was an unknown senator. After this speech, people started thinking of him as the next president of the United States.

Speeches Matter, Words Matter

2. The stage is a place where many stars are born and you have the potential. Luckily, we don’t have to be an actor to be a star, we can be a speaker. We simply need to put energy and effort into preparing our next speech and our life could be transformed. Be confirm 'Speeches Matter', 'Words Matter'. We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal – just words. We have nothing to fear but fear itself – just words, just speeches. It’s true that speeches don’t solve all problems, but what is also true is that if we can’t inspire our country to believe that we can make it, then it doesn’t matter how many policies and plans we have. Strong and useful words definit matter!

A Short Analysis on the Speech

3. I have carried out a short analysis on Obama’s speech that made him the president and here are few key areas that we can learn from:

Ability to Connect With the Audience

4. Obama not only filled his speech with stories, he made the core of his speech a story. Instead of making the core of his speech a collection of dry ideas and supporting these ideas with stories, he made the core of his speech a story and explained how it applied to the ideas he talked about. This technique gave him an incredible ability to connect with the audience. It was like watching the plot unfold in a movie, not listening to a boring political speech.

How can we apply this to our speeches?

5. We may not have a personal story as powerful as Obama’s. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t apply the same technique in our speeches. Anything can be turned into a story. A simple way of doing so is to make ourself a character in the story. For example, let's say, we want to talk about the latest web design and development tips and tricks. Instead of listing them out in bullet point fashion, we can talk about how they play an important role in our job. There is a personal story behind everything. Find this story and share it with the audience.

Anaphora

6. 'Repeating the first word or phrase in one sentence at the beginning of successive sentences.' This seems to be Obama’s favourite rhetorical device as he used this many times in his speech.

Antithesis

7. The use of contrasting/opposing ideas in adjacent sentences or phrases. Opposing ideas are shown in different colours.

'I say to them tonight, there’s not a liberal America and a conservative America; there’s the United States of America. There’s not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America; there’s the United States of America.'

Rhetorical Devices

8. Obama filled his speech with rhetorical devices. Rhetorical devices help make your speech easier to listen to and visualize. Ket's find out the types of rhetorical devices Obama used in his speech:

Polysyndeton

9. Adding a series of conjunctions (and, or, yet, but, so) which are not normally found in successive words.

'There’s not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America; there’s the United States of America'

Enumeratio

10. Dividing a subject in constituent parts or details.

'I thought of the 900 men and women, sons and daughters, husbands and wives, friends and neighbours who won’t be returning to their own hometowns'

How can we include these devices in our speeches?

11. Anyone may argue and may say that these rhetorical devices apply only to higher political speeches and may sound silly if we use them. However, this does not have to be the case. It all comes down to the way we use them. For instances, ANAPHORA is one of the easiest and most used rhetorical devices in many speeches. However, it is important to make sure we don’t use rhetorical devices just for the sake of it as this can distract from our key message. The purpose of rhetorical devices is to clarify and emphasise a point we’re making and it is important they are used for this purpose only.

Sincerety and Honesty

12. Obama’s attitude can be summed up in one sentence: 'I can feel you'. He told personal stories, used rhetorical devices, prepared, used imagery and was deeply passionate not because he wanted to audience to connect and think that he wanted them to know that he feels their pain and shares their hopes. We can not feel Obama being arrogant, fake or rehearsed at any moment in the speech. We can sense that he felt and meant every word he said.

How can we apply this to our speeches?

When delivering a speech, we should make sure that our intentions and heart match up with what we are saying. When we use a rhetorical device, we should make sure that we use it to make our message clearer, not because we want the audience to think you are articulate.

Taking Full Prep

14. When Obama was given the task of delivering the 2004 keynote speech, he watched and read many previous keynote addresses as he said. Then he spent over two weeks writing his speech and a further two weeks editing it. He invested hours after hours often working on it beyond midnight and his final draft was then sent to the Democratic speechwriting team for further editing. After the speech writing was completed, he was given three one hour sessions to practice it.

How can we apply this to our speeches?

14. The importance of prep a speech is to be understood by heart and cannot be emphasised enough. Unfortunately though many people place little imp on prep. They write and deliver a speech quickly without practicing at all and try to take credit on that. But practices makes perfect. The thing to remember is that one speech can make you hero from zero and can take you to stardom in your career, business or field and is therefore worth investing in it. When we get an opportunity of that sort to express ourselves through delivering a speech, why not pour all our energy into prep it?

Passion

15. Obama’s passion in this speech can be felt by anybody. His body language, gestures, postures, his voice tone, his pauses, his hand gestures everything was unparallel and extraordinary. Everything he did and said was clearly motivated by deep passion about his message. Obama also used his hands in a way that complemented his words. He even extended the sound of certain words to add more passion to them. Sometimes he pointed with his finger, sometimes he put his index finger and the thumb together while pointing downwards. Sometimes he opened his palms and pointed them upwards. These doings were natural and spontaneous adding to his passionate delivery.

How can we apply this to our speeches?

16. We should be very meticulous ehile writing a speech. We should identify what the key message that we are passionate about. What is the one thing that we really want the audience to know. Initially It might be felt difficult. And sometimes it may even take days to identify, but once we do, we’ll be surprised how the speech almost writes itself. We will naturally use engaging words, apply open body language and use powerful hand gestures/postures.

Power of Imagery

17. The power of imagery is the highest in order. Like the greatest speakers - Obama also used the power of imagery to perfection. For instance, instead of saying my father was poor he said that 'My father was a foreign student, born and raised in a small village in Kenya. He grew up herding goats, went to school in a tin-roof shack.' The word poor is very subjective and hence doesn’t have the same power as the images. Barack drew the same. In another example, instead of saying that America was the land of hope, he drew images as fols:

'It’s the hope of slaves sitting around a fire singing freedom songs - the hope of immigrants setting out for distant shores; the hope of a young naval lieutenant bravely patrolling the Mekong Delta; the hope of a mill worker’s son who dares to defy the odds'. And a very important, powerful and wonderful line in the entire speech when he referred to himself, that is. 'the hope of a skinny kid with a funny name who believes that America has a place for him, too.'

How can we apply this to our speeches?

18. We know that Images are way more powerful than abstract words. Describing something creating an image is too powerful. Instead of saying that my undercommands or employees are hard workers, if we say how they toil for long hours to meet deadlines.

Comments/ Suggestions

1. In 2004, a one-term senator from Illinois took the stage to deliver the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in Boston. His speech really adds some credibility to it. This man had to spill his heart and soul into a speech to win over the majority. By the time Barack Obama had finished speaking, Democrats across the country knew they had seen the future of their party. The key to being a great leader is being a great speaker. Obama had that in spades, no pun intended. He inspired people with an amazing attractive power. Many American's truly used to believe Obama will be seen as one of the greatest presidents in about 10 years. He was a great charismatic man and left office after setting the nation in the right track. He dug the economy out of a a crisis and set the nation on the right path with a national health care plan.

Great Speaker

2. What a man! How refreshing to have an American president who is so fluent and inspiring in his use of the English language. Handsome guy, great speaker! One of America's best presidents to date and certainly one of the most intelligent they've ever had. The haters are clearly jealous and it's quite obvious. There are people who still look back to his speeches and think how did he pulled it off. He surely is a good Barack Obama. Many people could see goodness in him that shined through. Intelligent, educated, charismatic, a decent caring honest man and a good husband and father.
