6. You don’t have to work your way up to an Officer position – you can enter as one straightaway. This means you’ll get to take on real responsibility from a young age. If you join as an Officer in the Army, you’ll start training in your specific officer role from the outset. In the Army, however, you’ll first complete your initial officer training as an Army Officer, before moving into one of our specialist roles like:

Combat

Engineering

Intelligence

Communications

Logistics

COMPETITIVE SALARY AND BENEFITS

7. The skills you gain will be well sought after, outside of the military too – with Officers often hunted for positions at the top of the industry they’ve been trained for in the corporate world, for their first-class knowledge, expertise and leadership ability. So no matter what your career goals are, life as an Officer can provide more experience and opportunities for growth than most other jobs. Not only will you be paid to train, but salaries are competitive with the civilian world too. With additional benefits like world-class training and partnered study, an Officer career will accelerate your life like no other job.

JOB SATISFACTION

8. Lack of job satisfaction leads to tremendous frustration and results in job-hopping. Jobs in the civil world whether with the government or the corporate leave one with no alternate avenues if stuck with a frustrating portfolio or setup. On the contrary, the sheer variety, sense of purpose, responsibility and pride, negate any job dissatisfaction in the defence forces.

JOB SECURITY

9. For an effective career, a long-term strategy is essential and this is possible only if continuity and job security is assured. The Army has been structured to ensure that its personnel work with unhindered dignity. Additionally, statutory rules and regulations exist to safeguard the interests of the servicemen adequately both while in service and after retirement.

FOREIGN COURSES AND POSTING

10. The service also offers opportunity for courses and postings abroad. The Bangladesh Army is renowned all over the world and interaction with foreign armies is extensive. Service with UN Forces provides exposure and travel opportunities across the globe.

SOCIAL STATUS

11. All of us have our own opinion about what constitutes 'SOCIAL STATUS. However it is an undisputed fact that the status of a ‘warrior’ has stood the test of time. History and society have both held the soldier in esteem and offered him a unique status in society. By joining the Army, one becomes a member of an exclusive and elite brotherhood, which is the envy of one and all.

LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY

12. The Army provides lifetime opportunities to professionals like Doctors, Nurse, Engineers, Lawyers, and Teachers. Commissioned into the various Corps, one can pursue his or her passion to heart’s content. An excellent infrastructure, dedicated support staff, and healthy environment provide unlimited growth. The Army invests heavily in human and technical resources. The latest and the best tools are made available for research and employment. Periodic forays into the academic world are encouraged in order to imbibe and practice current technology in chosen field.

TRAINING AND POSTING

13. Training is a judicious mix of technical, military and managerial instruction, in top class institutions run by the Army and a host of other prestigious institutes and establishments including IT and Intelligence. In accordance with the training received, proficiency acquired and aptitude shown, one gets posted on a variety of regimental, staff, or instructional appointments in organizations throughout the country. Additionally officers proceed on deputation to various organizations and foreign appointments.

14. Unlike in a civil environment where a posting means virtual uprooting of a household and starting a fresh new station but in the Army it is merely a change of scene with better infrastructure facilities coming up even in small stations, the pangs of moving are speedily easing up.

QUALITY OF LIFE

15. As a Bangladeshi Army officer at 21, you’d be looking at a lifestyle that one cannot imagine in any other profession, so early in life. What compromises "Quality of Life”? On one hand is a job with a thick pay packet but with the drudgery of 9AM to 9PM schedule, no avenues and time for extracurricular activities, no scope for adventure and excitement, no social status, lack of family life, threat of being terminated with a month’s salary, working in suffocating environment with no self respect and honour. On the other hand is a job which offers you challenge, adventure, excitement, honour, prestige, self respect, whole some family life, safety and security for the family and to top it all the love, respect and esteem of our great Bangladesh. In the somewhat chaotic social and economic conditions that prevail in our country, Army life is an island of sanity and social order that is the envy of our countrymen. Quality of life is an important attribute of Army life, and has no parallel in any other service.

16. Some of the intangibles, which go to make the quality of life in the Army, are:-

A. Service of the motherland.

B. A profession to be proud of.

C. Opportunity to travel and know the country and its people/culture/flora and fauna.

D. Opportunity to serve and represent the nation abroad.

E. A pure and noble profession.

F. Honour and social status.

G. No stagnation, a new challenge every day.

H. Opportunity for growth.

I. Sports and adventure activity.

J. Messes, clubs and institutions facilities.

K. Education facilities – Both school and professional colleges for children.

L. Army ensures physical and mental health.

M. Quality of life ensured not only for officers, but also families.

ADVENTURES

17. Variety and adventure are the spice and romance of life. No profession has the kind of recreational and adventure facilities to offer as the Army does; from membership of the best clubs in country to horse riding, swimming, golfing, mountaineering, trekking and sailing. Posting to exotic stations gives one an opportunity to see Bangladesh and its different cultures, in all its vivid glory. So, if one is looking for a profession, which goes beyond being a mere job, accept the challenge and join the Bangladesh Army.

POST RETIREMENT

18. Even after laying down the uniform, Army officers continue to have the status of the most respected citizens of our country. This added to their ingrained code of conduct and ethical values enable them to occupy a special social niche in society. Since he is much fitter due to the active lifestyle he has led, a second career or lateral absorption in parallel employment is always eminently feasible. His do or die attitude and mental agility ensures that he never really grows into old age, but continues to contribute and thus remain a valued member of society.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

19. Here it would be apt to reiterate – That all professions serve our motherland – but none of them is in the same league as the Bangladesh Army – for this is the only profession which affords you the opportunity to live up to these stirring lines.

"To every man upon this earth, death comes sooner or later.

And how can a man die better facing fearful odds

For the ashes of his father and the temple of his Gods”

-Macauley

" I was angry with my friend;

I told my wrath, my wrath did end,

I was angry with my foe;

I told it not, my wrath did grow"

-George William Blake

20. For a more detailed information on the life of an army brat, here is a blog which gives you detailed insights in the life of an Army Offr:

WHAT IS AN ARMY OFFICER?

21. First and foremost, an Army officer is a leader. The officer plans the work of the organization, assigns tasks to subordinates, and sees that the work is accomplished to the highest standard. In that regard, an Army officer is similar to a manager in a corporation. But that is where any comparison to the corporate world ends. Officers lead by example. An officer must be willing to personally undertake any task that is assigned to a soldier. Even the most junior officer routinely has forty or more soldiers working directly under his or her control. In the corporate worldm it could take decades for an individual to achieve that level of responsibility.

22. The level of integrity and personal conduct required of an Army Officer are quite high — with very good reason. Officers daily make decisions that involve millions of dollars of resources. Their judgment and skill can mean the difference between life and death for the soldiers they command.

23. Over the years, three words have become the hallmark of what it is to be an Army Officer. Those words are Duty, Honor and Country. No matter what their specific duties are, or where they serve, these three words embody what it is to be an Army officer.

TOUGH BUT EDUCATIVE LIFE OF AN ARMY OFFICER

Day Start

24. Start the day with morning PT 0530 AM , followed by a breakfast (young officers can sneak in about half an hr of sleep ;-) in this time...0830 office if you are doing some staff appointment. otherwise you are involved in some training activity like firing, tactics classes. preparing for some inter unit competition or handling the administration of your troops. Lunch generally gets delayed to around 1400-1430 hrs which followed by games with troops from 1600 -1630 till the time you can play your heart out or the sun goes down. Thereafter you are engaged if you have some unfinished task that you were assigned...after this some many like to hit the gym , swimming pool, squash court or the mess for a well deserved drink.

Active Operations

24. Active operations is a totally different ball game. You can be out for 96 hours on patrolling to sitting in ambushes every alternate night if not daily. Most of the times, you move out on short notice. So you have to be ever prepared. In some places like CHT, you might have to undertake long range patrols (14-21 days) and you are totally self. As far as operating in CHT is concerned, well its more awe inspiring than many of the shows on discovery and nat geo........

Imparting Knowledge

25. Apart from all this, an army officer is on call 24/7. An Army Officer ensures honing his men’s skills, starting from morning physical training at 6 AM, firing, drills, games to evening games and night works. Being a leader, he needs to know anything and everything and so he will and has to spend a good amount of time studying.

Responsibility of Army Officers

25. There is a saying 'Responsibility Educates'. An officers from different fields like infantry, artillery, engineering, medical gets to work with some of the costliest and badass equipments in the country, from the lethal tanks and high tech radars to over the top Body scanners, its defence they work with the best.

CAREER PROGRESSION

26. An Army officer's career is generally a series of 2 and 3 year assignments, each one preparing you for the next. Personal abilities and preferences affect the choices a person makes. So there is no one career blueprint. There is, however, a general progression most officers' careers follow.

The Lieutenant Phase

27. Once a cadet graduates, he/she is commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. The first thing a young officer does is develop in his/her primary branch by attending the Basic Course. After that, some officers opt for Airborne or Ranger training (or both). But most go right to their first duty assignment. Progressing from second Lieutenant to Lieutenant, the young officer applies his/her training and develops his/her leadership abilities. In fact, learning how to lead troops is the key objective of this phase. Promotion to Lieutenant takes about two years.

The Captain Phase

28. A lot happens while you're a captain. The most important thing is to get experience as a company commander. A Company Commander is normally in charge of over 100 soldiers. Command experience, obviously, is a valuable resource throughout a career. During this phase, he attend the Officer Advanced Courses. Later in this phase, he attends utility courses that provides him with the necessary training to perform as a field grade staff officer. Additional training during the captain phase is the opportunity to become more valuable to the Army. Since this is when he chooses and begin to become qualified in a functional area.

The Major Phase

29. Being promoted to major signals a big step in an army offrs career. He becomes a key staff officer in charge of such areas as Personnel, Intelligence, Operations, or Logistics. He will be given new assignments which permit him to use previously developed skills, as well as expand his/ her overall professional development. The objective here is to develop further in their branch, and continue development in their functional area. Some officers area selected for Command and General Staff College for further enhancement of his knowledge and career. Promotion to Major takes about 10 years.

The Lieutenant Colonel Phase

30. Assignment might be as a Battalion Commander as Lietenant Colonel in charge of few hundreds of soldiers or a general staff officer in a division or corps. Outstanding performance will merit more and more challenging positions. Some officers are selected for the Army War College, where they become "experts" at their profession. Promotion to Lieutenant Colonel takes about 17/18 years.

The Colonel Phase

31. At this phase, the Army takes maximum advantage of his/ her talents. This means he will be assigned as a Brigade Commander in charge of thousands of soldiers or director of a large staff. His technical skills and accumulated executive talents will be put to the test. This is the senior level of responsibility. He is the top executive. Promotion to Colonel takes about 22/ 23 years.

Brigadier/ General Officer

32. Officers who demonstrate extraordinary leadership and executive abilities are selected to become general officers, the CEO's of the Army. They do nothing less than run the Army. From division commanders to post commanders to high level staff positions, general officers are responsible for maintaining an efficient and effective Army. Promotion to General takes about 25/26 years.
